The SINUMERIK 808D family (Adv Turning / Adv Milling) ships with an integrated S7-200 compatible PLC inside the PPU (Panel Processing Unit). Programming that PLC requires the PLC Programming Toolbox V3.x, a Windows utility that is not redistributed through public download channels. This reference covers how to legitimately obtain the Toolbox, install it on a supported Windows host, configure the PG/PC interface, wire to the X130 Ethernet port on the PPU, and resolve the firewall issues that block the first connection attempt.

1. Overview of the SINUMERIK 808D PLC Subsystem

The 808D PPU integrates a numerical control kernel and a soft-PLC that is functionally equivalent to a SIMATIC S7-200. The PLC user program resides in non-volatile memory inside the PPU and is loaded at power-up. Editing, monitoring, and online diagnostics are performed from a PG/PC (programming device) running the PLC Programming Toolbox V3 and PLC Programming Tool V4.0 SP3 (or higher) over TCP/IP.

Use X130 for the programming device connection. X102 is reserved for the HMI display panel and must not be reconfigured for the PG/PC link. Mixing these ports is the single most common source of "host unreachable" errors in the field.

2. Prerequisites

Before requesting media or touching a network, confirm the following:

1. Operating system. Siemens qualifies the Toolbox for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2, and Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit). Windows 8 / 10 are not officially supported by the V3 installer, although the runtime will frequently launch under compatibility mode. A 32-bit Windows 7 install is the lowest-friction path because every Toolbox DLL is pre-registered.
2. User account. Local administrator rights are required for the install and for the firewall exceptions discussed in Section 9.
3. Free disk space. 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended if STEP 7 Micro/WIN V4.0 SP9 is co-installed.
4. Ethernet adapter. A 10/100 Mbit RJ45 NIC, dedicated to the 808D link (not shared with corporate DHCP).
5. Patch cable. Standard Cat5e or better, straight-through. The 808D PPU supports Auto-MDI/MDIX, so a crossover is not required.
6. Toolbox media. Order the CD through Siemens with the matching article number; specify "PLC Programming Toolbox V3.0 for SINUMERIK 808D".

3. Obtaining the Toolbox Software

Siemens does not publish a download link for the PLC Programming Toolbox for 808D. The legal, supported channels are:

• Regional Siemens representative / authorized distributor - the typical path for end users and OEMs. Order the media by quoting the SINUMERIK 808D article number and the request "PLC Programming Toolbox V3.0 CD".
• Siemens Industry Online Support ticket - open a Service Request (SR) at support.industry.siemens.com, attach a screenshot of the PPU nameplate, and request the media. The agent will provide a shipping address or, in some regions, an internal share link.
• SINUMERIK hotline - the SINUMERIK 808D service line can dispatch the CD for end customers under warranty or service contract.

Once the CD is in hand, verify the contents:

4. Installing the PLC Programming Toolbox

Perform the install on the programming PC, in the order shown. Always run Setup.exe as Administrator.

1. Insert the CD. If AutoRun is disabled, browse to the root and double-click Setup.exe.
2. Select language (English / German / Chinese). Click Install PLC Programming Toolbox V3.0.
3. Accept the licence agreement. Default install path is C:\Program Files\Siemens\PLC Programming Toolbox V3.0 (or C:\Program Files (x86)\... on a 64-bit OS). Do not change unless there is a documented reason.
4. When prompted, select Install PLC Programming Tool V4.0 SP3. This co-locates the STEP 7 Micro/WIN-compatible editor that the Toolbox shells to.
5. Reboot when prompted. The install registers SPTAPI.dll, S7Onlinx.dll, and adds the Set PG/PC Interface shortcut to the Control Panel.
6. After reboot, verify by launching Start → Siemens Automation → PLC Programming Toolbox V3.0. The splash screen should report Build 3.0.x.x and the path to the active project.

5. Configuring the PG/PC Interface

The Set PG/PC Interface tool is the central registry for which Windows network adapter is bound to the S7 protocol stack. Wrong selection here is the most common reason a Toolbox install "sees" the NIC but cannot open a connection.

1. Open Start → Control Panel → Set PG/PC Interface (on 64-bit Windows it lives under Siemens Automation).
2. In the Access Point of the Application dropdown, select S7ONLINE (STEP 7).
3. In the Interface Parameter Assignment Used list, select the entry that matches the physical NIC you plugged into X130. Typical descriptors are:
   • TCP/IP → Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (on a laptop docking NIC)
   • TCP/IP → Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (on a desktop)
4. Click Properties. On the IP Protocol tab, ensure IP address is obtained automatically is unchecked; enter a static IP on the same /24 as the PPU, for example:

   IP address:      192.168.215.10
   Subnet mask:     255.255.255.0
   Default gateway: (leave blank)

5. Confirm with OK and then OK again on the main dialog.

6. Network Topology and Physical Wiring

The simplest, supported topology is a point-to-point link between the PG/PC and the PPU. Avoid inserting a managed switch, VLAN trunk, or any device that performs deep packet inspection between the two endpoints - the 808D uses raw ISO-on-TCP (port 102) and is easily broken by proxy ARP, IGMP snooping, or DHCP relays.

Verify the X130 link LED is solid green before opening the Toolbox. A flashing or dark LED indicates either a bad cable, a switch in the path, or a NIC that has not finished auto-negotiation.

7. PPU IP Address Verification and Reset

The 808D ships with 192.168.215.1 on X130. If the controller has been re-commissioned, the IP may have been changed at the HMI under Setup → Commissioning → Network. To verify without trusting the HMI:

1. Press MENU SELECT on the HMI.
2. Navigate to Setup → Commissioning → Network → X130.
3. Read the active IP. If the subnet is no longer 192.168.215.0/24, change your PG/PC static IP into the same /24.

To reset to factory defaults: enter the same menu, select Restore default, and confirm with the yellow OK key. The PPU will reboot (~60 s) and X130 will return to 192.168.215.1.

8. Establishing Communication from the Toolbox

1. Launch the PLC Programming Toolbox V3.0.
2. From the menu bar select PLC → Communications (or click the Communicate with PLC icon on the toolbar).
3. In the Communications Path dialog, choose TCP/IP → Network Interface Card (your NIC).
4. Click Find CPU. The Toolbox broadcasts a UDP discovery packet on the local subnet and lists every 808D PPU it locates.
5. Select the PPU whose IP matches the value seen in Section 7. The CPU type should report as S7-200 (CPU 224 XP compatible).
6. Click OK. The status bar in the lower-right corner of the Toolbox window should switch from Offline to Online.

9. Resolving Windows Firewall and Security Software Blocks

On Windows 7, the default Windows Firewall profile blocks inbound ISO-on-TCP (port 102) and the Toolbox discovery UDP probe. Even when the link LED is green and ping succeeds, the Toolbox will report Connection timed out or Cannot reach partner until the firewall is configured. This is the single most common field issue on first-time commissioning.

9.1 Create a Toolbox firewall exception

1. Open Start → Control Panel → Windows Firewall → Advanced settings.
2. In the left pane click Inbound Rules, then New Rule... in the right pane.
3. Select Program, then This program path and enter the full path to the Toolbox executable, e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Siemens\PLC Programming Toolbox V3.0\PLCToolbox.exe.
4. Choose Allow the connection. Tick Domain, Private, and Public.
5. Name the rule Siemens PLC Toolbox V3 (private). Finish.

9.2 Open the S7 protocol port

1. Repeat the wizard, this time selecting Port.
2. Choose TCP and enter Specific local ports: 102.
3. Allow the connection on Private and Domain profiles. Name the rule Siemens S7 ISO-on-TCP 102 (in).

9.3 Allow the Toolbox discovery probe

The Toolbox uses a UDP probe (default port 50000) to find CPUs on the subnet. Allow it with a third rule: UDP, port 50000, inbound, all profiles.

9.4 Third-party AV / endpoint protection

Symantec Endpoint Protection, Trend Micro, and McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention frequently inject a Layer-2 shim that intercepts ISO-on-TCP. Add the Toolbox executable and the S7 DLLs (S7Onlinx.dll, SPTAPI.dll, s7otbxdx.dll) to the AV allow-list, or temporarily disable the network filter during the first connection for confirmation.

10. Online Operations and First Project Upload

Once online, the Toolbox exposes the standard S7-200 project workflow:

1. Project → New - create a blank S7-200 project. Select CPU type CPU 224 XP (functionally equivalent to the 808D PLC).
2. File → Export → To Toolbox - convert the Micro/WIN project into a *.ptp Toolbox project that the 808D firmware accepts.
3. PLC → Download - write the project to the PPU. The PPU will request a warm restart automatically.
4. Verify with PLC → Run and check the Status tab; the PLC should report RUN within 5 s.

Always archive the project to a network share after a successful download:

• Project files: *.ptp (Toolbox native), *.mwp (Micro/WIN source).
• PLC image backup: PLC → Upload → To File, saved as *_backup_YYYYMMDD.ptp.
• Series commissioning files for the 808D firmware: Setup → Commissioning → Series Startup → Create Archive on the HMI.

Store at least the last three revisions. The 808D will refuse to load a Toolbox project whose Toolbox build is older than the resident runtime; the rule of thumb is to update the PC-side Toolbox whenever the PPU firmware is updated (and vice versa).
