Overview
The Siemens SINAMICS G110 is a sub-3 kW single-phase/three-phase 230 V or 400 V inverter from the SINAMICS V20/G110/G120 family of modular drives. In small motor applications (pumps, fans, vibrators, conveyor feeders, vibratory bowl feeders, agitators), it is common to drive a load on a repetitive duty cycle rather than a continuously running setpoint. A typical field requirement is to run a small 45 W vibration motor at a fixed 50 Hz for ten seconds, then coast for fifty minutes, repeating each hour indefinitely without an operator pressing start after every power cycle.
The G110 supports this requirement natively through terminal control with a fixed frequency setpoint. The trick is to decouple the Start/Stop command (controlled by a cyclic timer's volt-free contact into DIN0) from the frequency reference (held at a fixed internal value). Once configured, the inverter self-runs whenever DIN0 is high, stops when DIN0 is low, and restarts automatically when the timer next closes its contact — no operator pushbutton required.
Prerequisites
- Drive: SINAMICS G110 (any frame size appropriate to the motor; for a 45 W motor the smallest 0.12 kW / 120 W unit is mechanically adequate, although frame selection is usually based on input current and supply type).
- Motor: 45 W three-phase or single-phase induction vibration motor rated for inverter operation (insulation class F, VFD-rated windings).
- Supply: 1 AC 230 V or 3 AC 400 V per the inverter's nameplate.
- Cyclic timer: A digital timer with a volt-free normally-open (NO) contact, for example the Grasslin talento 471 pro, Finder 88 series, or equivalent DIN-rail digital timer rated ≥ 24 V DC, 0.5 A minimum contact rating.
- Commissioning tool: Basic Operator Panel (BOP) or the PC-based STARTER commissioning software via USS on the G110's RS485 port (optional but recommended for backup parameter storage).
- Wiring: 0.5–1.5 mm² control cable, ferrules, and a 24 V DC source (the G110 supplies an internal +24 V on terminal 9 referenced to terminal 7 for digital inputs).
Hardware Topology
The cyclic timer is the master controller. It toggles a single volt-free contact. The G110's DIN0 reads the contact state as an ON/OFF1 command. The frequency is supplied internally by the inverter's fixed-frequency block so no analog wiring is required.
Wiring the Control Circuit
- Confirm discharge state. With supply isolated for >5 minutes, verify zero potential between L1 and PE using a CAT-III rated meter.
- Connect the +24 V source. The G110 provides an internal +24 V on terminal 9 referenced to terminal 7 (digital common). Do not apply an external 24 V unless the manufacturer's instructions explicitly permit it on the chosen variant.
- Wire the timer's NO contact. Route one side of the timer's volt-free NO contact to terminal 9 (+24 V). Route the other side of the contact to terminal 8 (DIN0). This is the digital input that will be assigned the ON/OFF1 function.
- Leave DIN1–DINn open. Do not strap them to +24 V; doing so may assign unintended functions (e.g. reverse, OFF2, fault acknowledge) per P0702, P0703, ... and prevent the drive from running.
- Connect the motor. Wire the 45 W vibration motor's U-V-W leads to the inverter's output terminals. Observe rotation direction; the SINAMICS G110 supports direction reversal only when commanded; here the direction is set by wiring phase sequence.
- Connect the supply. Apply L1/L2/L3 (or L/N for single-phase units) and PE to the input terminals. Torque per the label side-plate values.

Configuring the Cyclic Timer
Set the Grasslin talento 471 pro (or equivalent) for an asymmetric repeating cycle with period T = 60 min and on-time ton = 10 s:
- Enter timer programming mode; select cycle rather than one-shot.
- Set T = 01:00:00 (h:mm:ss).
- Set ton = 00:00:10.
- Assign the output channel that drives the G110; confirm the contact type (NO).
- Power the timer from the same single-phase supply feeding the G110 so a supply loss resets both devices together.
The output contact is therefore closed for the first 10 s of every hour. While closed, +24 V is presented to terminal 8 (DIN0). The drive runs the motor at 50 Hz, decelerates over P1121, and waits. The next hour the contact closes again and the cycle repeats.
Verification & Commissioning
-
Manual override test (BOP): With the timer contact open, set
P0700 = 1temporarily. Press the green Run key on the BOP. The motor should ramp to 50 Hz and run continuously. Press the red Stop key. The motor should coast or ramp down per P1121. This proves the power and motor wiring are correct before any timer logic is enabled. -
Restore terminal control: Set
P0700 = 2. ConfirmP0701 = 1. - Short-cycle test: On the timer, temporarily set T = 30 s and ton = 10 s so the cycle is observable.
-
Observe: The BOP should show
r0002= frequency in Hz. At 10 s after the timer closes the contact, the displayed frequency should rise from 0 to 50 Hz over P1120, hold at 50 Hz briefly, then ramp to 0 over P1121 as the contact opens. -
Verify 5+ cycles without faults. Check the fault buffer (
r0947[0..7]) for any F-coded faults. - Restore production timing: Set T = 60 min, ton = 10 s.

Advanced Topics
Running at a different fixed speed
To change the operating speed without editing P1001, wire an additional timer contact to DIN1 (terminal 9 on the BOP-side terminal block varies by frame — consult the wiring diagram in the SINAMICS G110 Operating Instructions). Set P0702 = 15 (fixed-frequency select bit 0) and program a second fixed frequency in P1002. Toggle DIN1 to choose between 50 Hz and an alternative setpoint.
Multiple fixed speeds via binary coding
Up to seven fixed frequencies are accessible via binary coding of DI inputs. Set P0701=15, P0702=16, P0703=17 to assign bit 0, bit 1 and bit 2 of fixed-frequency selection. Populate P1001..P1007 with the desired frequencies and P1011..P1015 with the binary activation pattern (e.g. P1012=1, P1013=2, P1014=4).
Override / inhibit via hardware enable
For a service-interlock or maintenance inhibit, wire a normally-closed pushbutton in series with the timer contact. While pressed, DIN0 is held low and the drive will not run, even if the timer is in its ON window. This is preferred to setting P0701 = 0 at runtime because it does not require parameter writes.
Battery-backed timer
If supply power to the timer is interrupted, the ciclo must resume after power restore. The Grasslin talento 471 pro retains its programmed timing parameters for up to ~3 years on its internal battery; on power restore it begins a fresh cycle. If the cycle phase is critical, consider a timer with EEPROM retention (e.g. Siemens Sirius 3RP25 or Finder 88.92).
Field-Commissioning Notes
-
Don't use the BOP Run key as a substitute for wiring DIN0. Pressing Run on the BOP requires
P0700 = 1. The user complaint — “still have to push the start button after every power off” — is almost always traceable toP0700being left at the factory default of 1 instead of being changed to 2. - Don't pulse DIN0 with 24 V at every power-on with a one-shot RC network. The G110 latches ON only while DIN0 is high; removing the signal triggers a controlled stop. A one-shot circuit will start the drive for one cycle then leave it disabled indefinitely.
- Avoid USS or Modbus command source for this application. A cyclic timer cannot easily produce a serial frame; the terminal interface is the right physical layer.
- Confirm motor insulation class. Inverter-fed vibration motors generate a higher dv/dt than direct-on-line starting. Class B insulation is generally acceptable for short cables (<10 m); Class F is recommended for longer runs or for switching frequencies above 4 kHz.
- Mechanical considerations. Vibration motors draw 5–7× rated current during startup. The 0.12 kW G110 can deliver 150 % rated current for 60 s per the standard overload profile; verify that this is sufficient for the vibration motor's starting transient by observing r0026 during the first 1 s.

FAQ
Why does my G110 require a manual start push after every power cycle?
The factory default P0700 = 1 enables BOP control. When the BOP Run key is pressed the drive latches ON, but a supply power loss clears the latch. Setting P0700 = 2 and P0701 = 1 makes the drive follow the DIN0 input directly, so a closed timer contact (with +24 V on terminal 9) will start the motor without any BOP action.
Can I drive DIN0 directly from an Arduino output pin?
Yes, but only if the Arduino GND is commoned with the G110's digital common (terminal 7) and the Arduino's high-level output is within 5–24 V. Driving an optocoupler or a small 24 V relay from the Arduino and using the relay's contact to bridge terminal 9 to terminal 8 is the field-proven isolation method.
How do I change the fixed run frequency from 50 Hz to 40 Hz?
Edit P1001 from the BOP, set it to 40.00, and press P to confirm. No re-wiring is needed because the frequency setpoint source is fixed, not analog.
What is the difference between ON/OFF1 (value 1) and ON reverse/OFF1 (value 2) on DIN0?
ON/OFF1 starts the motor in the positive direction. ON reverse/OFF1 starts the motor in the negative direction. For a vibration motor where direction is fixed, use ON/OFF1. Avoid ON reverse unless you have explicitly verified that the vibration motor's bearings and unbalanced mass tolerate reverse rotation.
How long must I wait after powering off before touching the terminals?
Per the SINAMICS G110 manual, wait a minimum of 5 minutes after removing supply power before touching any terminals. This allows the internal DC-link capacitors to discharge to a safe level. Always measure between L1 and PE with a CAT-III multimeter before contact.
Can I use a mechanical mains timer (synchronous clock motor) instead of a digital cyclic timer?
Yes, provided the timer's output contact rating is sufficient (at least 24 V DC, 0.5 A) and the contact is volt-free. The advantage of a digital cyclic timer is exact ON-time resolution; a 24-hour mechanical timer typically has a 15-minute minimum resolution and is not ideal for 10-second pulses.
