Problem Overview

The SINAMICS V20 is a single-axis AC variable frequency drive from Siemens AG, available in the 0.12 kW to 30 kW power range and used for low-complexity pumping, fan, compressor, conveyor, and simple machining applications. Its default human-machine interface is the Basic Operator Panel (BOP), a six-button membrane keypad with a five-digit seven-segment LED display. On BOP-equipped units that are not ordered with the optional Intelligent Operator Panel (IOP-2) or a communications module (RS485 USS/Modbus RTU, PROFINET via the V20 Smart Access, PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP), the BOP is the only local means of reading, navigating, and writing parameters.

A commissioning issue reported across multiple SINAMICS V20 field deployments is that the BOP allows parameter navigation and read access but rejects every write attempt to the motor data group, particularly P0304 (motor rated voltage), P0305 (motor rated current), P0307 (motor rated power), P0310 (motor rated frequency), and P0311 (motor rated speed). The user can land on the parameter and the display shows the value, but pressing OK never commits the new value. The drive returns no error code and no warning on the LED. The fault is not a hardware failure of the BOP, the keypad ribbon, the drive's non-volatile memory, or the parameter storage; it is a deliberate, firmware-enforced write protection. The protection scheme is described in the Siemens Application Note "How to enable parameter editing via BOP on SINAMICS V20" and in the SINAMICS V20 operating instructions manual.

The condition is most commonly observed on:

  • Drives shipped with firmware v3.96, where parameter P0016 is not present in the parameter tree.
  • Drives that have been updated to a newer firmware, but where P0016 has been deliberately set to 1 (lock) by a prior service intervention.
  • Drives that have just been returned to factory defaults via P0010 = 30 / P0970 = 1 or via the IOP-2 "Restore factory defaults" command, and the BOP is the only available interface.
  • Drives where the IOP-2 or Smart Access module has been removed and the BOP is re-inserted, which in some firmware builds re-engages the legacy "ULOC?" write-lock.

All four cases resolve to the same three-pronged requirement: enable the BOP parameter-write bit, raise the access level to 3 (Expert), and engage the appropriate commissioning mode (typically P0010 = 1 for quick commissioning or P0010 = 3 for motor data). The motor must be stopped and the drive must be in the OFF state for motor data writes to commit.

Root Cause: Why the Drive Refuses Parameter Writes

The SINAMICS V20 firmware implements a three-layer parameter protection model. Every parameter write is gated by all three layers, and the failure of any single layer results in the BOP silently ignoring the OK keypress. The three layers are:

  1. Hardware-key lock (digital input or factory jumper) – On drives where a digital input has been configured as the parameter write inhibit (function 99 on P0701 through P0705), or where the hardware write-protect jumper on the control board is asserted, all parameter writes are blocked at the firmware kernel. The BOP cannot override this lock; the hardware signal must be de-asserted first. On the V20 base unit, this signal is the digital input configured through P0701–P0704 with function 99 (parameter write inhibit). If any DI is mapped to function 99, the corresponding DI must be low (0 V) before any parameter write can succeed. This layer is rarely the cause in field reports but is the first thing to verify when the BOP and the Smart Access module both refuse to write.
  2. BOP parameter-write enable (legacy "ULOC?" sequence or P0016) – The BOP itself maintains a software flag that enables or disables parameter write from the BOP keypad. This is the layer that most often blocks editing on legacy firmware, and it is the focus of this article. On firmware v3.96, the flag is the legacy "ULOC?" bit. On firmware that includes P0016, the flag is the value of P0016. The flag is volatile in the legacy path and non-volatile in the P0016 path.
  3. Access level (P0003) and commissioning filter (P0010) – Even if the BOP write flag is enabled, the parameter will not write unless the user's access level is at least the level required to view and write the parameter, and the drive is in a commissioning state that allows the parameter group to be modified. The motor data parameters P0304–P0358 are visible at access level 2 but only writable at access level 3, and only when P0010 is in 1 (quick commissioning) or 3 (motor commissioning).

When a field engineer reports that the motor data cannot be edited on a V20 with FW v3.96, the failure is almost always in layer 2 combined with a default value of P0003 that is too low. The Siemens Application Note "How to enable parameter editing via BOP on SINAMICS V20" is the canonical reference for this condition.

Important: On firmware v3.96, parameter P0016 is not in the parameter list. Attempting to navigate to P0016 will simply jump past it, which leads many engineers to believe the parameter has been removed or the BOP is malfunctioning. The parameter was added in later firmware versions (3.97 and the entire 4.x line) as a software replacement for the legacy "ULOC?" button sequence. The button sequence remains supported on all firmware versions and is the correct unlock method for v3.96 units.

Affected Firmware and Hardware Scope

The SINAMICS V20 has shipped with several firmware generations since product launch:

Firmware family Example versions P0016 present? ULOC? button sequence supported? Recommended unlock
V20 3.x pre-P0016 3.92, 3.93, 3.94, 3.95, 3.96 No Yes ULOC? long-press + M
V20 3.x post-P0016 3.97, 3.98, 3.99 Yes Yes (retained for backward compatibility) P0016 = 0 (preferred), or ULOC?
V20 4.x 4.00, 4.01, 4.02, 4.10 Yes Yes P0016 = 0 (preferred), or ULOC?

The BOP hardware (order number 6SL3055-0AA00-4BA0 for the integrated BOP on the 400 V frame sizes A and B, and 6SL3255-0VA00-4BA0 for the pluggable BOP on frame size C and above) is identical across firmware generations. The BOP does not store any user data; it is a pure I/O device that translates keypresses into serial commands sent to the drive's control board. As a result, replacing the BOP does not change the firmware version, the access level, or the BOP write flag – the operator must still perform the unlock sequence on the new BOP. The IOP-2 (order number 6SL3255-0AA00-4JA0) supports the same unlock sequence via the touchscreen F-key menu, but additionally exposes a "Restore factory defaults" wizard that resets the firmware to defaults without requiring P0970 navigation.

Unlock Method A: BOP Button Sequence (ULOC?)

This is the legacy unlock path supported on every SINAMICS V20 firmware version, including v3.96. It is described in section 4.2.2 of the operating instructions manual and in the Siemens Application Note linked above. The procedure is performed entirely from the BOP keypad, no additional software or hardware is required, and the change takes effect immediately.

  1. Press and hold the OK/Hand-On button for longer than 2 seconds. The BOP buzzer will sound once on initial press; do not release the button when the buzzer sounds.
  2. Continue holding OK. After approximately 2 seconds, the display will change from the current parameter (or the fault display) to the text "ULOC?" with a blinking cursor on the "?".
  3. Release the OK button.
  4. Press the M (Mode) button once. The display will briefly flash "----" and then return to the previously displayed parameter.
  5. The BOP parameter-write flag is now enabled. This is a volatile flag; it is cleared on power-down, on a CPU reset, on a factory reset, or on a firmware update. After any of those events, repeat the sequence.

Engineers commonly report that this sequence "does nothing" on first attempt. The most frequent causes are: the button is released before the 2-second long-press threshold is reached, the OK button is the wrong physical key (on the V20 BOP the OK key is the green run/hand key in the center of the navigation cluster, not the M key to its right), or the keypad cable is loose. Verify by repeating the sequence and observing that the display transiently shows "ULOC?" – if the text never appears, the long-press is not registering and the button is mechanically suspect or the cable is loose. On a BOP that has been hot-plugged while the drive was powered, the BOP firmware may need 2–3 seconds to re-initialize the serial link; wait 10 seconds after plugging the BOP in before attempting the unlock sequence.

Unlock Method B: P0016 Parameter (Newer Firmware)

On SINAMICS V20 firmware versions that include P0016 (added in v3.97 and later in the 3.x firmware line, and present in all 4.x firmware builds), the BOP parameter-write enable is exposed as a normal editable parameter. The parameter has two values:

Value Display alias Meaning Effect
0 ULOC Editing enabled BOP will accept parameter writes (subject to P0003 and P0010 filters).
1 bLOC Editing disabled (default after factory reset) BOP rejects all write attempts. Display shows "bLOC" when the user navigates to a parameter and presses OK.

To unlock using P0016:

  1. Navigate to P0016 using the arrow keys. Press OK to enter edit mode; the value "1" (or "bLOC") will be shown.
  2. Press the down arrow once to change the value to "0" (or "ULOC").
  3. Press OK to commit. The value "0" will be shown without the trailing decimal point that indicates an uncommitted change.
  4. P0016 is now 0; the BOP will accept writes. The setting is non-volatile, so it persists across power cycles and CPU resets. It is reset to 1 only by a factory reset (P0970 = 1).

If the user's access level is set to 1 (Standard) and P0016 is not in the visible parameter list, raise P0003 to 3 (Expert) first. P0016 is visible at access level 2 (Extended) on most firmware builds but is only writable at access level 3 on the stricter firmware variants. On 4.x firmware, P0016 is always visible at access level 1.

Field note: On some firmware builds, P0016 will display as "bLOC" rather than "1" when read, and the edit mode will show "ULOC" rather than "0". These are display aliases for the same value and the same internal bit. Treat them as functionally identical. The "bLOC" / "ULOC" aliases are localized for readability on the seven-segment display; the underlying storage is a 0 / 1 integer.

Access Level (P0003) and Commissioning Mode (P0010)

With the BOP write flag enabled, the next two conditions must be satisfied for a motor parameter write to commit. These are not optional: the V20 firmware will silently reject the write if either is wrong, with no error message.

Access level (P0003): defines which parameters are visible and editable from the BOP. The valid values are:

P0003 Level Description Typical use
1 Standard Most-used parameters; hides expert-level settings. End-user operation.
2 Extended Adds commissioning and I/O mapping parameters. Field commissioning.
3 Expert All parameters including motor equivalent circuit data, controller gains, and protection thresholds. Service / advanced commissioning.
4 Service Internal service parameters, password-protected on most firmware versions. Siemens service only.

Motor data parameters P0304 through P0358 are visible at access level 2 and writable at access level 3. Set P0003 = 3 to enable editing of all motor data. P0003 itself is always writable (when the BOP write flag is enabled) regardless of the current access level, because it is the gatekeeper parameter and is intentionally self-referential.

Commissioning mode (P0010): defines the parameter filter that determines which parameter group is currently active for writes. The valid values are:

P0010 Mode Writes enabled for
0 Ready Normal operation; only a small set of parameters can be written (ramp times, setpoints, run/stop sources).
1 Quick commissioning The full quick-commissioning tree, including motor nameplate data (P0304–P0311), ramp times (P1120/P1121), control mode (P1300), setpoint source (P1000), and command source (P0700).
2 Drive commissioning Drive-level parameters (control mode refinements, setpoint scaling, brake logic, flying restart).
3 Motor commissioning Motor data and motor equivalent circuit parameters (P0304–P0358, P1900, P1910).
4 Encoder commissioning Encoder data (P0400–P0499).
5 Technological application / units Application-specific scaling and units.
15 Parameter reset preparation Pre-reset filter; required before P0970 transitions.
29 Download Parameter download to non-volatile memory.
30 Factory setting Trigger for P0970 = 1 factory reset.

For motor data writes, P0010 must be 1 or 3. P0010 = 1 (quick commissioning) is the most common entry point and exposes the nameplate parameters in the sequence P0304, P0305, P0307, P0310, P0311. P0010 = 3 is used for full motor commissioning including equivalent circuit data, motor inertia (P0341), and motor identification (P1900). After all motor parameters are written, set P0010 = 0 to return the drive to "Ready" mode and finalize the parameters in non-volatile memory; the drive performs an internal save on the P0010 transition from 1 or 3 back to 0. The non-volatile save takes approximately 200 ms during which the RDY LED on the BOP blinks; do not power down the drive during the save or the parameters may be corrupted.

Critical: The drive must be in OFF state (no run command, no output to motor) when motor data is being written. A drive in RUN state will reject motor data writes regardless of P0010, P0003, and the BOP write flag. If the drive is in RUN, the run command (digital input, BOP Run key, or fieldbus) must be removed and the drive must coast to standstill before P0304, P0305, P0307, P0310, P0311 can be committed. The OFF state is indicated on the BOP display by "rdy" (ready) or by the absence of an active setpoint indication; "run" in the display indicates the drive is enabled and the motor is being driven.

Step-by-Step: Editing Motor Parameters P0304 / P0305

The following procedure works on a SINAMICS V20 with firmware v3.96 and a stock BOP, with no IOP or communications module. The motor is a standard induction motor with the nameplate data available. Replace P0304 and P0305 with the relevant nameplate values for the specific motor.

  1. Stop the drive. Remove the run command. If the drive is in RUN, press the green Run/Hand button to take the run command away, or remove the wire from the digital input that is mapped to run enable. Wait for the motor to coast to standstill. The display will show "OFF" or "rdy" depending on the firmware build.
  2. Enter the menu. Press M. The display changes to show the parameter number, beginning at P0003.
  3. Set P0003 to 3 (Expert). Press OK to display the current value of P0003. The default is 1. Press the up arrow repeatedly until "3" is shown. Press OK to commit. The display will return to the parameter number.
  4. Set P0010 to 1 (Quick commissioning). Use the arrow keys to navigate to P0010. Press OK. Press the up arrow to change the value from 0 to 1. Press OK to commit.
  5. Enable the BOP write flag (ULOC?). Press and hold OK for longer than 2 seconds. The display shows "ULOC?". Press M to confirm. The display returns to the parameter number. If the firmware supports P0016, also navigate to P0016 and set it to 0.
  6. Navigate to P0304 (motor rated voltage). Use the arrow keys to scroll from P0010 to P0304. Press OK. The current value is displayed.
  7. Set the rated voltage. Press OK again to enter edit mode. The least-significant digit of the value begins to blink. Use the arrow keys to change the value to the motor nameplate voltage. For a 400 V drive with a 400 V star-connected motor, the value is 400. Press OK to commit. The blinking stops.
  8. Navigate to P0305 (motor rated current). Use the arrow keys. Press OK. Edit the value to the motor nameplate current. For a 5.5 A motor on a 7.5 kW 400 V drive, the value is 5.5. Press OK to commit.
  9. (Optional) Set P0307, P0310, P0311. Repeat for motor rated power (kW), rated frequency (Hz), and rated speed (rpm). All four values are required for the motor model to be valid.
  10. Exit commissioning mode. Navigate to P0010. Press OK. Press the down arrow to change from 1 to 0. Press OK. The drive saves the parameter set to non-volatile memory. The RDY (ready) LED on the BOP stops blinking and stays solid; the display shows "rdy" or the actual output frequency if a run command is present.
  11. Run motor data identification (optional but recommended). Navigate to P1900. Press OK. Change the value to 2 (rotating measurement, full identification). Press OK. Apply the run command; the drive runs the motor through the identification sequence and writes the measured stator resistance, rotor resistance, and leakage reactance to P0350, P0352, P0354, P0356. After identification, set P1900 = 0 to clear the request, or it will re-trigger on the next run command.

If any step silently fails, return to step 5 and confirm that "ULOC?" appears; if it does not, the long-press is not being recognized and the button sequence must be repeated with firmer contact. If the long-press is being recognized but the parameter write is still rejected, the most likely cause is that the drive is in RUN state or that P0003 has not actually been set to 3 (read P0003 back to verify).

Factory Reset and Recovery Edge Case

A common field scenario is a V20 drive that has been factory-reset (P0010 = 30 followed by P0970 = 1, or via the IOP-2 "Restore factory defaults" command) and then cannot accept writes to the motor data parameters. The root cause is that the factory reset returns the BOP write flag to its locked state and returns P0003 to 1 (Standard), so even though the motor data parameters appear in the navigation tree they are not in the editable set.

The recovery is identical to the general unlock sequence: perform the "ULOC?" long-press, set P0003 to 3, set P0010 to 1, and then re-enter the motor data. On firmware versions that include P0016, the factory reset will set P0016 to 1, and the parameter must be set to 0 to enable writes.

Field note: P0970 = 1 performs a full factory reset. It does not affect the BOP write flag – that flag is volatile in the legacy path and is not part of the parameter set that P0970 writes to. After a factory reset, the BOP write flag is implicitly cleared (locked), and the engineer must re-enable it with the "ULOC?" sequence or by setting P0016 = 0.

For drives where the factory reset was triggered by an unknown sequence (e.g., the user pressed and held the OK button while powering on the drive, which on some V20 firmware versions triggers a hidden factory reset), the recovery procedure is the same. Verify the firmware version with r0000 (the firmware version is displayed in the format "X.YY" where X is the major and YY is the minor revision; v3.96 displays "3.96").

Verification Procedures

After the motor parameters have been written, verify the write was accepted by reading the parameters back. The BOP should display the new value when the user navigates to P0304, P0305, etc., and the drive should not be in a fault state.

  1. Read-back check: With the drive in OFF state and P0003 = 3, navigate to P0304. Press OK. The value should be the value just written. If the value is the previous value (e.g., 0 for an unconfigured drive), the write was rejected and the procedure must be repeated.
  2. Power-cycle check: Power down the drive, wait 10 seconds for the DC bus to discharge, and re-apply control power. The motor parameters should persist. If they revert to 0 or to a different value, the non-volatile memory write did not complete, and the P0010 = 0 transition in step 10 above was not performed.
  3. Run verification (no-load test): With the motor uncoupled from its load, apply a small setpoint (e.g., 5 Hz). Verify that the motor rotates in the correct direction. Verify that the motor current displayed in r0027 is below the rated current P0305. If r0027 exceeds P0305 by more than 10 % at no-load, the motor equivalent circuit model is misconfigured; run P1900 = 2 to identify.
  4. Fault log check: Read r0947[0..7] to confirm no faults have been logged since the parameter change. The most common fault after a misconfigured motor nameplate is F0001 (overcurrent), F0002 (overvoltage), or F0003 (undervoltage). If F0001 appears at first run, the most likely cause is that P0305 is set below the actual motor current at standstill; raise P0305 to the motor nameplate value.

For drive parameters that are part of the safety chain (e.g., STO configuration, safe stop parameters, brake release thresholds), additional verification per the application-specific safety manual is required. The motor data parameters are not in the safety chain, so the standard motor commissioning verification is sufficient.

Troubleshooting Matrix

Symptom Probable cause Diagnostic step Resolution
BOP will not accept any write; display flashes "bLOC" when OK is pressed. BOP write flag is locked; P0016 = 1 on firmware that supports P0016. Check r0000 for firmware version. On v3.96, use ULOC? sequence. On newer firmware, navigate to P0016. ULOC? long-press + M, or P0016 = 0.
Parameter appears in list but OK is ignored without "bLOC" message. Access level (P0003) too low; or commissioning filter (P0010) does not include the parameter group. Read r0000. Check P0003. Check P0010. P0003 = 3; P0010 = 1 (or 3 for motor commissioning).
Parameter edits on the BOP but does not persist after power cycle. P0010 = 1 was not returned to 0; the drive did not perform the non-volatile save. Read P0010 after the change; it should be 0. Set P0010 = 0 explicitly; wait for RDY LED to be solid (not blinking).
Motor data writes commit but drive faults with F0001 on first run. P0305 set below the motor's actual current; or motor wired delta when parameter expects star. Read r0027 (motor current) at standstill. Verify motor wiring matches P0304 / motor nameplate. Re-write P0305 from nameplate; rewire motor in correct configuration; run P1900 = 2.
ULOC? sequence does nothing; the long-press is not recognized. Long-press threshold is 2.0 s exactly; some operators release at 1.5 s. Time the press with a stopwatch; should be > 2.0 s but < 3.0 s. Press and hold for a full 3 seconds; release after the display changes.
ULOC? sequence is not available; no display change on long-press. BOP hardware fault or ribbon cable loose; or firmware bug on early v3.96 builds. Power-cycle the drive. Try the sequence at first power-up before any navigation. If still unresponsive, replace the BOP; update firmware to v3.97 or later via SINAMICS V20 Smart Access.
Drive accepts motor data but motor does not run smoothly at rated speed. Motor equivalent circuit parameters not identified; the drive is using the nameplate-only model. Read P0350, P0352, P0354, P0356; if these are at default values, the identification was not run. Set P1900 = 2 and run; drive will identify the circuit parameters automatically.
Parameter list is empty or only P0000 / P0003 are shown. Access level too low; or drive is in a state that hides non-essential parameters. Check P0003; should be 3 for full visibility. Raise P0003 to 3.
Drive accepts motor data and identification but throws F0001 within 100 ms of first run command. Stator or rotor resistance (P0350 / P0352) is zero or unrealistically low after P1900. Read P0350 and P0352; compare to expected values from motor nameplate. Re-run P1900 = 1 (standstill ID) if rotating ID failed; manually enter P0350 from motor datasheet if known.
BOP write flag enables but motor parameters still report as read-only. Motor data parameters are gated by drive state; drive is in RUN or has an active fault. Read r0002 (drive state); should be 1 (commissioning) or 0 (ready). Read r0947 for active faults. Clear any active fault; remove run command; confirm drive is in OFF state before writing.

BOP LED and Display State Reference

The BOP has four status indicators that an experienced engineer can use to diagnose the drive state and the parameter-write path:

Indicator Color Meaning Action
RDY (Ready) Green solid Drive is in Ready (rdy) state, no fault, no run command. Safe to write motor data after unlock sequence.
RDY (Ready) Green blinking Drive is performing non-volatile save (after P0010 transition to 0, or after P0970). Wait ~200 ms before navigating; do not power down.
RDY (Ready) Off Drive is in fault state, or 24 V control supply is missing. Read r0947 for fault code; verify control supply.
RUN Green solid Drive is in RUN state, motor is being driven. Remove run command before writing motor data.
RUN Green blinking Drive is ramping up or down to setpoint. Wait for ramp to complete; remove setpoint if needed.
ALM (Alarm) Yellow solid An alarm condition is active; drive continues to run. Read r2110 for alarm code; address root cause.
FLT (Fault) Red solid A fault has occurred; drive has tripped. Acknowledge fault; read r0947; address root cause before retry.
Display "bLOC" BOP write flag is locked. Perform ULOC? sequence or set P0016 = 0.
Display "ULOC?" BOP is in unlock prompt state; press M to confirm. Press M.
Display "ULOC" BOP write flag is enabled. Navigate to desired parameter and write.
Display "rdy" Drive is ready, no run command, no fault. Proceed with parameter changes.
Display "run" Drive is in RUN state. Remove run command before writing motor data.

Safety, Standards, and Operational Limits

The SINAMICS V20 is a general-purpose industrial drive. Motor parameter changes do not affect the safety chain, the STO function, or any SIL-rated subsystem. The motor data writes are bounded by the drive's own protection logic, which will fault (F0001 / F0002) if the parameter set is internally inconsistent (e.g., P0305 set above the drive's rated output current). The drive will not allow a motor rated voltage P0304 to be set above the drive's input voltage class (230 V or 400 V depending on the drive variant), nor below 50 % of the drive's rated output voltage.

Before any motor parameter change on a drive that is part of a safety instrumented function (SIF), perform a management-of-change review per IEC 61511 and confirm that the change does not affect the SIF's PFDavg, the proof-test interval, or the demand mode. The motor data parameters do not affect the safety chain on a stock V20, but on V20 variants with the safe torque off (STO) option, the STO parameters are in a separate parameter group and are not affected by P0010 = 1 commissioning.

Safety: Disconnect the drive from mains, wait 5 minutes for the DC bus capacitors to discharge (verify with a CAT III 600 V meter on the DC+ and DC- terminals), before performing any wiring changes or replacing the BOP. The V20 BOP is hot-pluggable on most firmware versions, but the safest practice is to de-energize the drive before swapping the operator panel. Verify zero energy with a properly rated measurement device, not by relying on the BOP LED state.

The SINAMICS V20 is CE-marked and is designed to be installed in a pollution degree 2 environment per IEC 61800-5-1. The BOP membrane is rated IP54 when the V20 is installed in a cabinet with the appropriate sealing; the BOP should not be exposed to direct water spray or to conductive dust. The drive meets EN 61800-3 Category C2 (industrial environment) for EMC emissions, and the motor cable length limit of 25 m shielded / 50 m unshielded applies to all 400 V frame sizes. If a longer motor cable is required, an output filter (e.g., 6SE6400-2FL02-0BB0 sine-wave filter) must be installed, and the carrier frequency P1800 may need to be reduced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my SINAMICS V20 BOP refuse to write motor data on firmware v3.96?

On firmware v3.96 the parameter P0016 is not yet present in the parameter list. The BOP parameter-write flag is the legacy "ULOC?" bit, which is locked at power-up. To enable writes, press and hold the green OK/Hand button for more than 2 seconds until the display shows "ULOC?", release, and press M once. Then set P0003 to 3 (Expert) and P0010 to 1 (Quick commissioning) with the drive in the OFF state. Refer to the Siemens Application Note 109779917.

What is the correct long-press duration for the SINAMICS V20 ULOC? unlock sequence?

Hold the OK/Hand button for more than 2.0 seconds and less than 3.0 seconds. The display will change from the current parameter view to "ULOC?" with a blinking cursor. Release the button at the "ULOC?" display and press M once to confirm. If the long-press threshold is not crossed the display will not change and the unlock will silently fail.

Can I edit P0304 and P0305 on a SINAMICS V20 while the motor is running?

No. The drive firmware rejects writes to motor data parameters (P0304 through P0358) when the drive is in the RUN state, regardless of the BOP write flag, P0003, and P0010. Remove the run command, allow the motor to coast to standstill, verify the display shows "OFF" or "rdy", and then re-attempt the parameter write. The P1900 motor identification sequence does require a run command and is performed after the nameplate data is written.

How do I know whether my drive has firmware v3.96 or a newer version?

Read r0000 on the BOP. The firmware version is displayed in the format "X.YY" – v3.96 displays "3.96". If the firmware version is 3.97 or higher, parameter P0016 will be visible in the parameter tree and can be used as the alternative unlock method. If the firmware is v3.96 or older, the ULOC? button sequence is the only method available without a firmware update via the SINAMICS V20 Smart Access module.

After a factory reset, why do P0304 and P0305 return to 0 and not to my saved values?

A factory reset (P0970 = 1, or P0010 = 30 followed by P0970 = 1) returns all parameters to their factory defaults and does not preserve any user-written motor data. After the reset, the motor data must be re-entered by following the same unlock sequence (ULOC? or P0016 = 0, then P0003 = 3, P0010 = 1, write the nameplate values, P0010 = 0 to save). The reset is also a useful verification: if the motor data writes are still rejected after the reset, the underlying protection layer has not been cleared and the ULOC? sequence must be repeated.
